With four months to go until the opening of the 2024 Olympic Games and St Patrick’s Day just around the corner, YourDay has a few tips on how to welcome the British. Because speaking English is not enough to welcome our British or Irish partners. You also need to adopt the right posture and have the right codes. Here are a few tips!

You’ve invited your British partners or clients to the Olympic Games and you’re not sure how to welcome them? Don’t panic, despite appearances, Great Britain and France have much more in common than any other countries. However, there are a few things to bear in mind, and here are a few examples.

Focus on punctuality

Be on time, because the British hate delays. They also appreciate attention and a personalised welcome. So avoid replying with a simple “I don’t know”, as they prefer to be asked on their behalf. Of course, politeness is essential, so avoid gestures such as shrugging your shoulders or using an overly direct tone that could offend them.

Don’t neglect accommodation details

If you are accommodating your partners in a hotel, make sure that the rooms are equipped with a kettle, tea bags, sugar and milk capsules so that they can prepare their tea at their convenience. Access to British newspapers and TV channels will also be greatly appreciated.

Think about the menu

When you’re welcoming your British customers, food is an important consideration. Our advice? Have your menus translated and provide anecdotes about particular dishes in English. Do you want to please them? They appreciate regional wines and like to discover new flavours. In particular, vegetarian dishes, fresh bread, etc.

Don’t skip tea time

Finally, offer a selection of teas, including at least one of British origin. Cherry on the cake, the English can’t do without their afternoon tea, served between 4pm and 5pm. Tea time is sacred, and not just at Buckingham Palace!
